Short-Term Running Goals:

2024 GOALS:

to not get fat

Long-Term Running Goals:

Continue running as often as I can, as far as I can, as fast as I can. Teaching my kids (by example) the rewards that come from putting in the work. Very slowly get to 50 states.

Personal:

I'm married, with two sons, 17, and 18.

I started running because someone dared me to.

I ran my first race 3 days after my 40th birthday. (Disney)

10 miles on Legacy Trail. Slow. 84 Degrees. I was pretty beat down for this run. Bad diet and sleep last night. This is not the best way to start the year. The only positive news from this run is that I did not give in to the urge to cut it short. Oh, and some kid caught a nice Spanish Mackerel off the Roberts Bay Bridge.

I don't have much in the way of a year end wrap up / look ahead into 2017. I mean, 2016 was a pretty bad year for me running-wise. I feel like I know what was missing. All of my runs were meaningless, untimed runs. If you want to race longer distances you need to train longer distances. Same thing goes for speed and recovery. So, if you look at what I did last year, you would think I was training to race 8-9 minute pace for 7.5 miles. I did that over and over again. How could I expect anything better on race day? So this year, I hope to train myself to run faster. Bring back the speed work, tempos, and intervals. I hate those things because the run magic never happens on the track for me. The run magic happens when I'm crossing the Dona Bay Bridge at surnrise, in a state of running induced spiritual creaminess. (Wait, what?) I just need to get back to doing the speed work that will lead to continued championship mediocrity. I also need to take recovery - sleep - diet more seriously. 46 years old will be here soon. Yeesh! On the bright side, ..... ...... ..... No where to go but up from here!

It's all good Tom. Once you finish a run, it's a success. Sometimes, running induced spiritual creaminess trumps speed and, over the long haul, it's never mediocre when we can delight in the little things. Like the sunrise, or the nice catch of fish. Happy New Year to you!

Speaking as one who will hit 47 this year... I get ya. Sometimes the runs blur together, but even you realized the victory in not cutting short today. Keep looking at that bright side! Nice 10! Happy New Year

From I Just Run on Fri, Jan 06, 2017 at 14:56:18 from 107.77.64.96

Good thoughts Tom. I was just talking to my daughter about the speed and race goal mentality. I tend to lean to far in that direction and never get in "a state of running induced spiritual creaminess". 😊

When I have run the track in the evenings, there is, at least, some light on the track from the baseball fields next door. No one is playing baseball / softball at 5:30 am. I'm going to have to run intervals in the evenings.

I started late to avoid some storms. 7 am start. It was supposed to be the usual 10.2 mile - hood route to legacy Trail to Colonia and back run, but I needed to find a POP @ 6 miles in. I had to take a .8 mile detour to find one because most of the homes are built in that community. TMI, but crisis averted. I caught some rain @ 8 miles in. It was windy the whole run. Kicked the last mile in 6:41, which kind of surprised me. I didn't think it was that fast.

I tested out running with a headlight this morning, since I plan on headlight running at the track later this week, and have only done this once before, and that was @ 2 years ago. It went fine. But i wonder if there was a benefit to the cold weather. I already had asomething on my head covering my ears. I winder if it would be different if it were warmer outside.

Also, I ran my first race 6 years ago today. A lot of stuff has happened since then, running and otherwise. It's pretty crazy to look back.

I find the headlight stays in place better with the hat, but it still is not too bad in the summer without a hat.

I'm going to think about the flying pig. The price jumps 1/31, so I promise to have it figured out before then. Maybe we can get that Dan guy to run it, too! Ha!

I'm not feeling very consistent these days, but maybe signing up for something is what is needed!

From Tom K on Sat, Jan 14, 2017 at 18:40:39 from 71.203.24.182

First, low tide and exposed oyster beds do not produce pleasant aromas. The experience is probably better than an ice storm, though.

Second, Dan, are you up for racing a marathon in May? If so, where are you looking?

We spent a couple of hours at the beach yesterday skimboarding. I crashed on my second run. Fortunately, I only sprained my pride, and because of how I landed, I accumulated a ridiculous amount of sand in my shorts. Then my kids used my own lines on me, to make me skim again, so I had to do about a dozen more runs after that. You can't lecture people about not giving up, if you give up.

I was kind of nervous about it when I went running this morning, but there were no side effects. I did 7.5 hood route miles, just beating the 9 minute man. 64 degrees, or so. I saw 6 other runners out today, which is, like, 7 more than usual.

Then I went home and took the boys to the soccer fields, so I could do my barefoot runs. 2 up, (8) x 100 sprints, jog back, 2 down. Ususally I do this stuff after church, but I decided to get this out of the way early today. I'm really enjoying the barefoot running. I believe this will make me a more efficient runner.

Then church, then back to the beach for more skimming. The water, although colder than I like, is this awesome shade of blue right now. It's really striking. We got up to about 82 degrees today. I just hung out on the sand bar, while the boys went skimming today.

It has been a great weekend.

Hey, that looks like a lot of fun. And kinda familiar too. Except here, the water is frozen solid, and it's snow that works its way into your shorts. And you're not actually wearing shorts, but snow pants. But other than that - much the same. Glad there were no lingering ouches.

I would like to run a race in clown shoes someday. I'm sure I could beat SOMEBODY. And then they would have to tell their friends that they lost to a guy wearing clown shoes. It would be especially awesome, if they honked like your shoes, and I passed them in the last 100m. Because then, they could hear me coming, and pushing to stay ahead, and still lose.

But seriously, maybe it's because it was so quiet out there, but I was really aware of my grunting. I should run like someone's watching.

They won again, and it wasn't even close. What's worse is Johnny played a big part in the win. For the season, he got to be, like, 4 for 56 from the floor. And still there is much arrogance. 2 more games. I'm sorry about your kid's season, Rob. But it's hard to teach lessons through sport if all they do is win. He DID have a sweet lay-up in the game, I guess.

7.5 miles. Hood route to Legacy trail and back. 7am start. 50 degree drizzle. Steam coming up from the lakes. This run felt way better than it should have. There were some good moments where everything was clicking. I don't know if the barefoot stuff is going to happen today. It might be too cold / wet for that.

2pm. At field for barefoot running. 2 up. (8) x 100ish sprints, jog back. 2 down. I had a chance to weigh in tonight. I do not like what the scale says.

i actually just finished reading your birmingham report (sunday study hour).

how scared should i be of the mile 9 hill? also, +10 for using the word "vurpy" -- the single best description i've heard about what it's like to eat goop.

From Tom K on Sun, Feb 05, 2017 at 11:12:48 from 73.91.1.30

You can not trust a Floridian 's perspective on hills. Allow me to refer you to fellow ex-Utahn Adam RW's race reports from 2014 and 2016. His 2016 report includes an elevation profile. After you win big in Alabama, you will then mock me for being a big wimp about hills. And I'm kind of looking forward to that.

From allie on Sun, Feb 05, 2017 at 11:38:38 from 71.56.28.146

ah, i hadn't seen those yet -- i will read them. thanks.

seeing as i hail from the world capital of downhill racing, you should be the one doing the mocking about hill wimpery. i've yet to prove i can run a good marathon on a course that doesn't look like this:

From Tom K on Sun, Feb 05, 2017 at 13:45:42 from 71.203.24.182

It looked like a downhill in the e-mail. You know, memories of hard parts of races fade over time. Unless they are named "Heartbreak" or "hospital" or something cool, they just kind of go away. The Georgia marathon course appears hilly-er to me, and you run that, like, every day. You're going to do fine. More than fine.

Ever since Saturday, when I ran with Dan, any little thing- sniffles, cough, aches, etc.- keeps me from doing a workout. I could easily slip into 2016, where every run lacked purpose, the amorphous blob of pseudo fitness. It's pretty obvious who I should blame here.... Tom Brady.

Most of my runs are just aerobic building at a low HR and then a couple times a week I go hard. I think those slow runs are just as important if not more so than the hard ones. Keep running with a purpose.

16.25 miles. Hood route to Legacy trail to Circus Bridge and back. Last 3 miles in 22:06. Not great, but not awful either. A pretty strong finish to a bad week. A couple of things from the run. First, this crazy muscle bound dude on a bike went by me in the opposite direction. His arms are bigger than my legs for sure. Anyhow, he goes by, and i hear a crash behind me. It took me about 5 or 6 steps for it to register that no neck guy just wrecked his bike. Then I stopped and turned around and asked him if he was okay. He was super embarrassed as he was digging his bike out of the woods. What the heck just happened?! It's a ten foot wide sidewalk! Did I freak him out by saying good morning? Did I cause him to wreck? The other thing is that ospreys were everywhere today. Some even flew next to me as i was running. It was crazy. I know I should say that i enjoyed the company. But they are much faster than that. I consider the slow flying to be mocking me. One thing i can't stand is a smug seahawk! The only thing worse than that would be an arrogant anhinga.

After all of that, I took the boys to the beach for a really long time today. There were manatees swimming in the gulf that drew a big crowd.

maybe we are running the wrong races.

Sadly, I am not a princess...Yet.

Also, how BAD would Xenia have to be before you said "This race is really overpriced"?

6 pm. 8 miles at Celery Mound. I ran a 2 mile loop. 85 degrees. Full sun. I used to do hill intervals out here. But today, I went long and consistent pace. I ran the grass levees and ran up and down the hill on each lap.

You know, this is a unique place. Gathered here are runners, and mountain bikers, and Hikers in training carrying full packs. Where else can they practice? Also, a large number of rare birds show up here. People come from surprising distances to see birds they might not see otherwise. I see them carrying around gimungous camera equipment, and tip toeing towards a grassy marsh, as I go by grunting. Add to that - I was involved with the planting design on top of the mound, which is just now coming into maturity. And finally, the fact that this place is 100 yards away from the big cat sanctuary. It is common to hear a lion out there. I should totally run here more often.

On the way back, right before I crossed Dona Bay, the biggest Opossum ever waddled into the middle of the trail. Like, I originally thought it was a racoon. So, naturally, I picked up a rock and whipped it at him. I missed him by @ a foot. He didn't even flinch. So as I ran towards him, I started clapping my hands. That made him move. His back had ridges. So flipping gross.

Oh yeah, the run was pretty good. I'm playing a lot of soccer lately with the boys. So I'm a little sore-er than usual on most runs. This one felt good, though.

So, I've been in injury denial for a while. I don't know if it has to do with running at soccer, or change in shoes or what, but I haven't felt right in about a month. My left hip has been hurting mostly non stop. Since I make myself run even though I hurt, now my lower back has started hurting in some sort of body compensating move. I'm not going to go to the doc about this, like I have in the past. I don't see much point in paying someone to tell me that maybe I should take some time off from running. Or worse yet, paying for an x-ray or MRI to have the doc say I don't know - Could be this, could be that. Fun times over here, I tell ya.

First, the injury update. I went to a "regular" doctor on wednesday night. I say regular, because it was not my usual orthopedic doc that I run with occasionally. That dude was in Boston. "Regular" doctor gave me a shot and a prescription. I go back next wednesday.  No running until then.

Second, congrats to all who ran Boston. I was tracking like 5 people that all had great starts, but then fell apart at the half. 3 of them floridians! So if those guys couldn't take the heat and the weather, I'm pretty sure it was miserable for all parties involved. So, good job for anyone finishing!

Third, because of the doc visit and other shennanigans wednesday, i missed the one night only boston movie. I would have liked to see it. There is not a lot of info about when it will come out on video. Bummer.

Almost 30 years ago, I drove a section of Center Road with some friends, doing about 80 mph, at night with my lights off, looking for the "Center Road Ghost." There was an urban legend in Venice. The story goes...Motorcycle rider...blah, blah, blah,.... Center road dead ends into River Road...words, words, words,....they never found his headlight, or his head-ooooh!.... If you drive on Center Road at night, his headlight will appear-Ooohhh! Soooo Creepy! So, in my youth, I have done this, on a few occasions. I have determined that the way the road used to be - headlights at a distance appear to be a single light, in really close proximity. It was just the way the old road reflected the light. Anyhow, I ran this section of Center Road this evening. And I didn't even think about the Center Road Ghost, until I was at River Road, and a motorcycle flew by.

The run was super hot, (feels like 96) but I feel like my injury is gone. I held 8:20 pace, pretty even, for the whole thing. I'm pleased with that. I am considering running a 5k on Mother's Day. I probably will.

also, driving 80 with your lights off sounds like a classic teenage terrible decision. i once rode in the back of a pickup truck set in neutral, going backwards down the steepest hill in town. we called it homemade roller coaster.

smh.

glad the injury is feeling gone.

From Tom K on Wed, May 03, 2017 at 12:29:17 from 47.206.60.114

I hope you don't have to haunt people. Usually that is associated with a tragic (and often ironic) event. Like, if you are decapitated by a tee shirt launching gun, you will end up ghouling sports arenas, wearing a tee shirt that says "EVERY DAY I'M DRIBBLIN'!" That just sounds horrible!

There's no ghost for normal people that die of natural causes. "Ooooh! He was a trustworthy accountant, a father of four, and a wonderful husband! Ooooh! Better watch out!"

So, my vote is for no haunting.

I might not be entirely out of the woods with this hip thing. Best I can figure, it is directly related to soccer with the kids (@ 2 hours of it last night). I do a lot of stuff with my right foot, which means I pivot a lot on my left foot, causing a lot of twisting on my left hip.... It looks like I have to give up the soccer, which really stinks.

Not too good. I got a cold that is hanging on longer than it should. Also, while doing yard work this weekend, I threw out my back. The timing is rotten. I am planning on running a 10k in late August (Yes, it is in Florida!). I train better when there is a race on the horizon. I survived the mini-monsoon at the beach last night. We were with another family for the fireworks show. Then this HUGE storm rolled in, and we hid under someone's canopy. The wind kicked up, blowing stuff all over the beach. The dads held down the canopy, as the kids were screaming, half excited, half terrified. They will never forget this. You couldn't look to the wind, because your eyes would get nailed with sand. Lightning crashing everywhere. Long story short.... God provided the fireworks last night.

That 10k next month- some of my coworkers know that I'm a bit off on my running game right now. This might make them want to take a shot at me. That thought got me moving a bit faster.

Amazing how competition motivates. I always seem to run faster without trying when there are other runners about. A problem in a bigger city when runners are everywhere!

I know you're supposed to be able to acclimatise to heat and humidity, but I have no idea how you can even move on those really bad days. Amazing!

5.5 miles. Hood route. 6 am start. Last 2 in 8:08, 7:08. Which doesn't sound like a lot, but given the 78 degree dew point, I'll take it. In the planning stage, I have every intention of running tempos and intervals. And I have all the respect in the world for guys like Mike, that can burn intervals in the soup. But I open the front door, and get hit with the wet blanket of humidity, I just laugh and think "let's just get the miles today, speedy stuff tomorrow." The point is, there is no "when it feels good, run faster" here. I have to consciously decide to make that happen.

Congratulations to everyone who raced yesterday! And if you raced in a bonnet, then that goes double!

5.5 miles. Hood route. 6 am start. Then 1/4 mile fast. 1/4 mile slow.

I want to do interval work not on a track. I just can't seem to get there. Since I'm a month from race day, I wanted to start doing speed work. So, yesterday I mapped out a route on mapmyrun, and then measured with a wheel in real life to verify, 1/4 mile, and a 1/4 mile recovery. Now I can run intervals out of my front door. So the plan was this morning to do 1.5 up, (4) x 0.25 mile + recoveries, 1.5 down. I went outside, felt the weather, and said "I'm just going to run 5.5 miles easy." Although I picked up the pace on the last mile, I was still fairly upset with myself for (once again) backing out of speedy stuff. So, I psyched myself up to do just one 1/4 mile run and recovery. The watch said 1:22, which is blazing fast for me. It made me question the measuring wheel.

I should have just done the workout I intended to do before wimping out.

So they have bugun work for an overpass of legacy trail over laurel road. If it is privately funded, then so what? I mean, it would have been more useful to construct an overpass over clark road, which is actually busy. But if "the friends of the legacy trail" want to build here, i dont care. However, if this is publicly funded, i can't think of a bigger waste of money, to benefit such a small minority. The only people benefiting from this overpass would be cyclists that do not want to slow down to push a button to cross the street.

Fort Hamer Bridge 10k. They have been building the bridge over the Little Manatee River for two years. Someone got the bright idea that they should run a race over it, before it opened to traffic. It is still under construction, technically. The views from the top were outstanding. So, given that this is the first time anyone has run this course, that the weather before and after the race was miserable, furthering problems in already bad parking logistics, that 2,600 people signed up for the races (They expected 1,500. This was the largest 10k/5k in Manatee County history.), this race, production-wise was way better than expected. Of course, the 5kers ate everything at the finish. Also, I don’t know what races have against providing water lower than room temperature. One church had a snow cone tent that I went back to many times, so I could get some ice.

I recognize that I’m out of shape, and not ready for racing. But there were a couple of other factors that contributed to my poor time. My co-worker ran the 5k. She got a PR! I am stunned that anyone could PR in the soup. The rain before and after really generated the dishwasher feeling that a PR was out of reach for everyone. Because of the parking situation (you can’t really park near this place), they had to delay the start an extra half hour to allow people to get there. That more or less wrecked my warm up. This is the second time this kind of thing happened to me, and both times it worked out bad. The course starts out, goes north 100 yards, then hairpin turns south to go over the bridge. Everyone had the same plan – I better get out in front of the pack before that hairpin on a wet road. It was kind of nuts, but then opened up on the big bridge. About a mile deep, hairpin #2 to go back north across the bridge again. I was braced for those turns. The course map made it clear those would happen. I was not braced for the 5 other little bridge crossings, extended running on brick pavers, or the other 4 hairpin turns on the course. Those were kind of a surprise, and really beat me up. I was solid for the first 3, then things started to unravel, but I held on. Like I said, I’m not in race shape. I was surprised by the 2nd place age group thing. I got another tile/coaster. Eventually, I’ll be able to tile a bathroom with 2nd place age group tiles. The guy that I used to consider my worthy adversary finished 4th overall. He has become much faster. He asked if I would run the remember the fallen 5k in two weeks, but boy #1 has a soccer tournament. Helmet Guy has returned. He is now Blonde 80s Rocker Wig Guy (think Kajagoogoo), and he beat me by a minute.

My parents drove up with my brother, which was cool. He turns 50 on Monday. Because of the late start, I could not attend the funeral in Venice for my next door neighbor at 10. So, I hung around to get my tile/coaster. Then back to Bradenton at 4 for a preseason soccer scrimmage for boy #1, that was lightning delayed twice. Many miles were driven on Saturday, and I was wore out by the end of the day.

This leaves me in a weird spot. The race was good enough to inspire me to run faster and race more. I just don’t have the time with the kids’ schedules to make that happen. Or, at least, it would feel that I would be intentionally misplacing my priorities to put running ahead of something it shouldn’t be ahead of, if that makes sense. But it felt great to go fast-ish again. I need more of that in my life.

The guy that won senior grandmasters asked me my time, and I told him kind of depressed-like. (this is, after all, my slowest 10k ever.) He was really excited for my time, and started high fiving me and patting me on the back. He kind of changed my attitude a bit. So I said “Yeah, don’t let the muffin top fool ‘ya! The kid can run!”

Sounds like a challenging but fun race. Maybe just focusing your running on 5 and 10 Ks for a while, so you can work on speed and not have to put in so many miles, would let you do both your running and keep your boys as priority # 1.

From Glory in the long run on Tue, Aug 29, 2017 at 13:07:24 from 67.2.204.211

Your priorities aren't off if you can't find the time to run as you used to. If you find activities that you do frivolously that you can replace with running, that's another story.

But kids schedules aren't frivolous. Enjoy your race and your shape now. You can take motivation, but I've found that I've spent so many races wishing "what if?" instead of enjoying what is.

Peace.

Thanks, guys. It is pretty wild that between Thursday 6pm and Saturday at 6 am, the forecast would shift from the east coast to the west coast. I had a long week last week. I still had to go to work every day. And then my evenings were filled with boarding buildings, disagreements with family, and indecisiveness. So, on Saturday morning, spouse and I checked the projected path, saw that Martin County would take the lightest hit, loaded the kids in the car and drove to stay with friends here. NO traffic on SR 70 headed east. NONE. My parents and my brother left on Friday and headed north on 75. They went through some crazy sleeping in your car typed traffic. The nearest hotel room they found was in Knoxville. So now, we're not riding it out on Venice. I have plenty of neighbors who are. I just couldn't see staying, when the path goes directly over my house.

We are fine. We lost some oak branches and fence panels, but that's it. Ironically, the place where we stayed during the storm is still without power. The kids had a great time boogie boarding, skimboarding, and kayaking the backyard storm surge where we were staying between feeder bands. Best. Hurricane. Ever. My parents lost a fence panel, too. They come back today, if there is enough gas and traffic allows it. Time for me to get to the other side of the state on Saturday morning - 2.5 hours. Time to get back Monday afternoon - 5 hours. Lots of re-routing and backups. Water crossing the road, etc.

I have been watching the buzzword of the hurricane season for the last couple of years. Apparently, every reporter got the memo to say "Eyewall Replacement Cycle" in every report.

As it relates to running, I wish I had a treadmill right now. I usually run in the dark, and there is way too much debris out there to make that a safe proposition. I'll get back to it. I promise.

3.5 miles. Hood route. 6 am start. Even with the long break from running, this went pretty well. Hopping branches and running through spiderwebs is no joyride, but still.

I talked to the old man that walks along my route every day. Of course, we talked about the storm. Irma shook 452 beautiful avocados out of his tree. I don't even like avocados, or guacamole. He can't even pick up the cans he put them in because of the weight. I'd like to help him out, so I took 15 to work.

These are the untold stories of Irma's devastation! Ha!

I got all of my parents' hurricane protection down with the boys last night. We were moving. I'd like them to come home to a normal house. Tonight is yard work.

I don't like avocados. I have no first-hand knowledge. However, there were 2 people in my office, that said they liked avocados, but rejected these because they said they did not like the texture of Florida avacados.

In other florida unusual food crop news, we cut up our jackfruit yesterday! This one might be the best yet!

I have had Billy Joel's "The river of dreams" stuck in my head for the last week.

PS Also, apparently the University of Florida tackle football squad won a match last night in the most unusual fashion. The relative newcomer ball thrower heaved an oblong spheroid 66 yards to a waiting ball catcher in the scoring area for the win. This may or may not have involved the mother of a deity.

And there was much rejoicing.

From Tom K on Wed, Sep 27, 2017 at 15:17:54 from 47.206.60.114

Kentucky is cursed in football. There is no doubt. In 1993, Danny Wuerffel threw 7 interceptions, and the Gators STILL won! There is no doubt in my mind, that had that holding call not been made, SOMETHING would have lost the game for Kentucky. A low-flying blimp would have blocked the kick, perhaps. That's just as believable as deciding not to cover the wideouts for two plays and GIVE your opponent 14 points. I don't hate Kentucky. I think of them in the "Well, bless his heart" kind of way the Yankees must look at the Rays.

Having said that, NO game can be considered a gimmee for the Gators, and yet somehow, they'll win the SEC east. MacElwain is the luckiest coach to walk the planet.

My running has been even more inconsistent than usual lately. I have really been throwing myself into sports with the boys. Basketball on Tuesday, soccer on Thursday. And again on Saturday and Sunday. It has been tough to get decent miles after really going in the evenings. Running is involved with those sports, but those aren't the only muscles you use when playing. Anyhow, I've been sore a lot lately. On the positive side, I have lost some weight. I did sprints with Tommy's soccer team last night. From this experience, I can safely say that I am not a sprinter (and I am also not 12!). You throw all of that non-running exercise in with a week of car and appliance trouble, and you get garbage for weekly miles.

I have been following Colin McCourt's story since February, and I find his training inspirational.

https://twitter.com/colinmccourt?lang=en

If he pulls this off, he is my new running hero. It is crunch time! 3 months to go!

I'm going to try to get a run in tonight, after I install a new washer and dryer.

7 pm. 3.5 miles on Venetian waterway park, behind Venice High School, under the friday night lights. I ran by in time to hear "Heeeeeeere come the Indians!" Something different. I always enjoy hearing Iron Man performed by a high school marching band (just as Ozzy intended).

Aside from breathing lint for the hour before I went running, the washer  and dryer installs were smooth.

3.5 miles. Hood route then around the block laps with Johnny. He intentionally tripped and fell on asphalt, so that I would stop and check on him, so he could take off and sprint to the finish. It's hard to explain the competitiveness of this kid, but throwing yourself down on asphalt to beat your injured father in a meaningless run that no one is timing or watching is pretty crazy. I don't know how to fix that kind of crazy.

Tommy's soccer team won the championship game 8-0. And it wasn't that close.

Here we go.

one of those times where you're like "how is this possible, universe?"

i used to start my runs at 4:30am when absolutely no one was out (except raccoons). but every now and then i would approach a four-way stop at the *exact* same moment as the one car that was out the road and we would have an awkward exchange of waving each other on to go first. i would always think -- HOW does that happen? just a few seconds earlier or later and it would have been seamless, but no, we had to hit it right on.

6 am. 1.5 miles. Just didn't have it.

I went to Fit2Run at lunch. Some folks in my office want to put on a fundraiser 5k, and asked me to help. It is early in the process, still. But putting on a race is more challenging than I thought. Also, why did they ask me? It would be like saying "Tom, you go to a lot of concerts. Do you think you can set one up?"

Then I found out that my division 1 college football coach has a better finishing time at Boston than your division 1 college football coach. I don't know if rhat translates into wins or points, but I sure think it's cool.

Then, after work, I had planned on running one of the courses we are looking at for the race. But the park was closed. They are storing the trucks there that are picking up Irma's mess.... still. So I ran around Benderson instead. 3.5 miles. 80 degrees at the start. There were a few rowers in the lake at the start. Sunset. Very cool.

I'm planning to plan. I am trying to ramp up the miles for the rest of the year, and see where that leaves me health-wise on new years, and then decide from there.

10.2 miles. Hood route to Legacy Trail to colonia and back. 6 am start. Misfired the stop watch on the first half (Floridian in gloves) 42:38 2nd half. 8:22 pace I set out to run 7.5, but the weather was so cool and dry, and I felt so good, I kept going. That happens like never. I'm sure Mike had great weather in Tampa this morning, and had a great race.

Good job getting out and taking advantage of the nice weather.

5.5 miles. hood route. 41 degrees. 40 d.p. I am not used to moisture -free running. My moisture wicking attire is generating odd static electricity at my walk to start running. This is all short-lived.  We will have highs in the mid 70s by next weekend, and back to my endless summer.

7.5 miles. Hood route to Legacy Trail and back. 5:45 am start. 58:56. 7:51 pace. Well, hello!, sub-8 minute miles. I know it’s been a while, and we used to hang out quite frequently, but it’s great to see you again. You are breathing heavier than I remember. Anyhow, I’m thinking you must have lost my number or something, because I’ve been here, literally, the entire time you’ve been gone. I hope that this reunion will inspire you to check in on me more often. I, sniff- sniff, miss you, man! (runs away sobbing).

Oh yeah, happy birthday to boy #2.

Once around the block (0.4), then 12.9 in 1:54:45. 8:54 pace. Great weather. 6:30 am start. Lots of runners out. Low tide. We saw the last jedi last night. It was okay, but i think the popcorn affected my run!

After the run, boy #1 had a soccer game up in fish hawk. They lost 1-0. Back in Venice, Johnny's basketball team won without him, as he injured his wrist yesterday on the playground at school. Timing is everything!

Hmmm. I almost stepped in frozen raccoon poo....

OH! and after the Steelers/Pats game I am convinced the NFL wants the Pats to win. Add that to our conversation.

From Tom K on Wed, Dec 20, 2017 at 17:56:36 from 66.87.149.17

Ben should have spiked it, they shouldn't have been in that position in the first place, etc. Etc.

However, that call cost more than the game. It gave the Pats home field advantage through the playoffs. It was a big deal.

It doesn't make sense that if he was running the ball it would have been a touchdown. Also, he was un touched. That should go into the decision, right?

From Dan on Wed, Dec 20, 2017 at 18:53:45 from 74.140.172.126

Yes agreed on they shouldn't have been in that situation to begin with...

But not only were they only penalized twice for 2 yards...

That's clearly a TD. The ball breaks the plane! We were all discussing that any other position that's a score but because he a WR he's not? Seemed like the announcers were just as shocked.

Yep playoffs now go through New England. Huge.

5.5 Miles, Hood Route. 6 am start. 50:10. 9:07 pace. Fog.

Have you ever mentally zoned out so deep in a run that you trip over the slightest change in sidewalk elevation? I did. Today. With a mile to go. That makes twice this year. Today's fall was much better than last time. Last time, I left skin on the sidewalk. Today, I threw my body to the grassed ditch between the sidewalk and the road, and then NAILED a rolling round off cartwheelish move. Fortunately, the cars that were driving by didn't stop to ask if I was okay. I would rather they tell the story to their friends with "I saw a guy fall while running today," instead of "I asked him if he was okay, and he became this total jerk." Because out of embarrassment, who knows what I would say? I'M FINE! I'M FINE! I'M FIIIIINNNNEEE!

7.5 miles. hood route. 5:40 am start. 1:05:45. 8:46 pace. Even thicker fog. Not the thickest I've seen, but still, kind of cool. I managed to stay upright throughout the run. My running co-worker yesterday - "Well I've only fallen once." Guess what happened to her this morning? She fell.

So I've been thinking - You know that game you played on a rainy day when you were a kid with your brothers and sisters, where you pretend the floor is "hot lava" and you jump from the couch to the ottoman to the lazy boy and back again? Well some kids really really liked that game, and they never wanted to stop, even when entering adulthood.

So now they do parkour.

Then early Christmas with mother in law. Guess what? I got running stuff. Then to boy #2s basketball game. They lost. This is his first loss in basketball, ever. He is generally a sore loser, but he took this well. Streaks end. It happens.

7.5 miles. Hood route to Legacy trail and back. 10:00 am start. 74 degrees. 1:03:26. 8:27 pace. I'm not used to running in full sunshine. I got to see a 4'-5' gator sunning himself on the bank of Curry Creek. I always forget how large their heads are, in proportion to the rest of their bodies. The head is like 1/4 of their size, especially when young.

I rewatched Rogue One on netflix last night. IMO, that is the best Star Wars movie. I know the zealots prefer Empire. But they are, you know, wrong. Every time a new episode comes out, like this Christmas, people argue about which one is best. I vote for Rogue One. So I watched it again, and I stand by my vote.

Nice running Tom... as a Star Wars EXPERT here (been watching since age 6 IN THE THEATER LOL).... I must comment. Rogue One.... IS THE BEST!! I agree. Empire is very good too, but not as good as Rogue One.

From I Just Run on Thu, Dec 28, 2017 at 21:10:52 from 199.38.187.9

I didn't really like this latest Star Wars movie. Went to see it a couple of days ago.

Same expertise as Dan, and I agree with both of you. Rogue One all the way. I have to defer judgement on the current release ... haven't seen it yet ... but the reviews seem so-so.
