Short-Term Running Goals:

2024 GOALS:

to not get fat

Long-Term Running Goals:

Continue running as often as I can, as far as I can, as fast as I can. Teaching my kids (by example) the rewards that come from putting in the work. Very slowly get to 50 states.

Personal:

I'm married, with two sons, 17, and 18.

I started running because someone dared me to.

I ran my first race 3 days after my 40th birthday. (Disney)

3.5 miles. Hood Route. 70 deg. 100% hum. Rough one. I was wondering why I felt so bad the last 2 runs, and then I remembered, I gave blood Wednesday. I have finally come to the conclusion that I can't be a blood donor and a runner. It's just too taxing.

Oh yeah, Both boys are sick. Throwing up and at the other end. Good times.

I stopped giving blood too. I feel a little guilty but not guilty enough to stop my selfish ways.

Hope the boys feel better soon. And hope it bypasses you somehow.

The boys are on the mend, but we're on a completely flavorless diet over here. Blandsville!

I don’t know if this is the right place to post this, but I’m fired up about it, so who cares. The other big news, is that I have accepted a new job today. I start the 23rd. For the last 3 years (before I joined the blog), I have had 2 jobs. By day, I’m a landscape architect. By night, I’m a janitor at the Venice YMCA. The night job used to be at Home Depot, unloading trucks and stocking shelves. Spouse works part time, so she can be more available for the kids. The new job will make it so I don’t need a night job anymore, and spouse can remain part time employee / full time mom. I negotiated most of the terms of the new job over the phone in the hotel hallway in Birmingham. Life’s challenges never come evenly spaced. The last couple of weeks have been nuts. Racing somewhere new, sick kids, interviews, giving present employers notice, … a huge weight has been lifted now that all of this is soon to be over.

Anyhow, this kind of change is huge, in what it means for family time! As it relates to running, I imagine I’ll have to change the title of this blog from “I Run When I Can” to something else. I used to have to shoe horn runs in between jobs, or I would have to run on crazy levels of sleep deprivation. The new job buys me 20 extra hours of “life.” I’m sure some of those hours will go to running, but it is too early to say how much.

I think I most look forward to establishing a new routine.

Sorry to dump this here, but where else am I going to say it?

He'll yeah brother. Super happy for you and your family! I couldn't believe how you were managing that schedule and running major miles. Good things happen to good people and you guys are some of the best!

tom - that is great news and definitely worth blogging about. 20 hours is huge. your life just changed! i'm very impressed you kept up that kind of schedule + running + family life. i feel bad for ever complaining about not having time to run...you make time or you don't, right? :)

congrats to you and good luck.

Big congrats Tom! more sleep + more running + more family time = more happiness. Awesome.
