August 26- Fort Hamer 10k

RECOVERY (I'm not a kid anymore) and SPECIFICITY (make training runs mean something).

Also, I am determined to put my boys on some snowboards by the end of the year. This is the year.

Long-Term Running Goals:

Continue running as often as I can, as far as I can, as fast as I can. Teaching my kids (by example) the rewards that come from putting in the work. Very slowly get to 50 states.

Personal:

I'm married, with two sons, 10, and 12.

I started running because someone dared me to.

I ran my first race 3 days after my 40th birthday. (Disney)

7.5 miles. hood route. late start today and no miles yesterday because of my buddy's all day 40th birthday party, that started with an off shore fishing trip and ended with a killer sunset at the beach. It was really great.

Today is my parents' 51st anniversary. What do you talk about after 51 years?  I think you've covered everything by that point.

3.5 miles. hood route. 6 am start. This dew point below 70 thing is amazing. 

Every now and then, I get down to the end of a day, I'll have to stop, ask myself, "What've I done?" It just seems so useless to have to work so hard, And nothin' ever really seem to come from it. And then she looks me in the eye....

My running has been even more inconsistent than usual lately. I have really been throwing myself into sports with the boys. Basketball on Tuesday, soccer on Thursday. And again on Saturday and Sunday. It has been tough to get decent miles after really going in the evenings. Running is involved with those sports, but those aren't the only muscles you use when playing. Anyhow, I've been sore a lot lately. On the positive side, I have lost some weight. I did sprints with Tommy's soccer team last night. From this experience, I can safely say that I am not a sprinter (and I am also not 12!). You throw all of that non-running exercise in with a week of car and appliance trouble, and you get garbage for weekly miles.

If he pulls this off, he is my new running hero. It is crunch time! 3 months to go!

I'm going to try to get a run in tonight, after I install a new washer and dryer. 

7 pm. 3.5 miles on Venetian waterway park, behind Venice High School, under the friday night lights. I ran by in time to hear "Heeeeeeere come the Indians!" Something different. I always enjoy hearing Iron Man performed by a high school marching band (just as Ozzy intended).

Aside from breathing lint for the hour before I went running, the washer  and dryer installs were smooth.

I love living here. I love this time of year as the sun sets behind the muhly grass in the dunes with the purple plumes, that appear to be glowing. It's beautiful. I love the smell of walking through the sea grapes and the mangroves. I love that my kids see how awesome this place is. I love that we are all happiest while looking at a sunset, with our toes in the sand. This is home.

Also, I ran in 78 degree dew point this morning. Let's put that on the "con" side.

Virtual high fives to Rhett and Dan for breaking 100 miles last week! You guys are bananas.

I said all of that stuff about Venice yesterday because the weather was so bad. Running in 78 d.p. (and again today) is awful. I don't want to complain about the weather all of tthe time. If I was reading that, I would think "why don't you just move? " So, I have to put up with a couple of miserable days of running with a snorkel. I feel like I get much more in return.

If you've never run in 78 degree dew point, you are really missing out.

Rough week. It took me until Tuesday to be able to tie my shoes. Here it is - Saturday - And I still ain't right. Better, sure. But I've still got a tender back. I will be building on this 3.5 mile week next week. No where to go but up!

3.5 miles. Hood route then around the block laps with Johnny. He intentionally tripped and fell on asphalt, so that I would stop and check on him, so he could take off and sprint to the finish. It's hard to explain the competitiveness of this kid, but throwing yourself down on asphalt to beat your injured father in a meaningless run that no one is timing or watching is pretty crazy. I don't know how to fix that kind of crazy.

Tommy's soccer team won the championship game 8-0. And it wasn't that close.

3.5 miles in much cooler weather this morning. I saw people in jackets. I played a bunch of basketball and soccer last night. I've been off the pain meds for @ 2 days. So, I reckon I'm cured from the back stuff and should start ramping up the running again. 

Here we go.

10.2 miles. Hood route to Legacy Trail to colonia and back. It was my longest run in a while, and it felt like it. Then, i took rthe boys and my mom and we walked to the top of celery mound. Then we checked out the Audubon society center.

7.5 miles. Hood Route. 7 am start. Then Church. Then Tommy's soccer game (they lost 2-1, but played hard, and we got kudos from the other team's parents- They came down from Fishhawk - cool town name). Then back to Church. Then Home. Then McElwain fired. It's a crazy world.

Someone should sell tickets.
