Long-Term Running Goals:

Continue running as often as I can, as far as I can, as fast as I can. Teaching my kids (by example) the rewards that come from putting in the work. Very slowly get to 50 states.

Personal:

I'm married, with two sons, 13, and 14.

I started running because someone dared me to.

I ran my first race 3 days after my 40th birthday. (Disney)

This race was to count as my last bit of speed work, before my marathon in a couple of weeks. So for that purpose, things went really well. I think I got a better time than what they had, but since I was just using this race as a tool for bigger things, I'm not going to pitch too much of a fit about it. I think I was @ 20 seconds faster. The race is gulf front, out and back. the final 0.1 was on grass. I think it was @ mid 40s at the start with high humidty. Johnny had a football game right after the race, so I didn't hang out for my medal. He dropped 4 passes, and made 10 tackles (including one where he ran a kid down from behind to save a TD). Um, he might be playing defense from now on.

After a year and a half of running different variations of this route, @ 3x per week, today was the first time I dipped below 7 minute miles.

16.25 Miles. Legacy Trail to Circus Bridge and back. 5:30 am start. 2:13:28. 8:12 pace. 7:35 last mile. 70 Deg. 100% hum., 68 d.p. I think the humidity was really >100%, if that is possible. I don't mean to complain about running conditions, given what the majority of folks on this blog are going through. But this might be the most humidity I have experienced. It didn't rain, but the roads were slick. Just miserable. I had hoped to get @ 10 minutes faster than this, but given the conditions, I think this will do.

A PR is a PR, and that is plenty to be excited about.

10k Split: 42:12

Half Split: 1:31:40

20 Mile Split: 2:24:20

So, it is pretty obvious that I went out way beyond my abilities. When there is a 6 minute difference between my first 10k and my last 10k,... yeah, that's not good. So, there is much work to be done with learning paces. Beautiful course. I was worried that this race would be like Charleston, where you have 5 miles of scenery, and 21 miles of industrial wasteland. Not the case. Oak hammocks and lakes throughout. 97% humidity, and the early miles were like ice skating. Also, very flat. You have one overpass @ mile 2, and on the way back @ mile 25. The Hokas did their job. My legs feel the best they ever have after a race. I ran the whole race behind a guy named "Brandon" who I guess is like a local celebrity, because he had fans everywhere on the course screaming for him. I passed him in the last 5k somewhere. The finish festival was great, and I ate all of the Cajun stuff I could get my hands on. I felt a little bad for the excellent band that was playing. They were yelling for everyone to raise their hands and stomp their feet, but most people could not. They were a really good band. Anyhow, congrats to all of the other FRB folks that raced today. I'll catch up on everything when I get back home Tuesday.
