Long-Term Running Goals:

Continue running as often as I can, as far as I can, as fast as I can. Teaching my kids (by example) the rewards that come from putting in the work. Very slowly get to 50 states.

Personal:

I'm married, with two sons, 17, and 18.

I started running because someone dared me to.

I ran my first race 3 days after my 40th birthday. (Disney)

5.5 miles. Hood route. 42:24. 7:42 pace. I put my folks' Christmas stuff in the attic, and then went out. Not as long as I wanted to go because of the very late start, but the pace felt pretty good. Then I caught up on sleep.

I'm thinking that I will revise my short term running goals after my next race. I can't see past Baton Rouge right now. 

Also, January 9 marks 2 years of racing. It's one of those weird anniversaries that only I care about. It has got me thinking about what I used to think was possible, and how that has changed. I look at the (chubby?) guy in these pictures, and try to recall what was going through his head:

Good running Tom. I'm curious to see your new goals, you have made so much improvement in such a short time!

BTW...who is the "chubby" guy in the pictures and why are wondering what was going through his head? You are a different person now. It reminds me of the bible verse:

Ken, @ 30 pounds since Disney. I probably lost @ 30-40 pounds BEFORE Disney. To be honest, the weight loss goals were done by the time I finished MCM. Since then, it has just been about paces, and the weight loss has been a side effect.

IJR, the old has gone. But sometimes it's fun to think about what you didn't know way back when. For example, when I walked to the parking lot after Disney, I saw a guy wearing a 50 Marathons in 50 States shirt. I asked him "Is that a real thing?" Now, we plan our family trips around these races. I realize I've only been doing 2 races a year, so I'll be done when I'm 65 (in theory), but still. A 2 minute chance meeting in a parking lot changed the way I look at running, vacations, budgeting, etc. This is just one example. I find these moments fascinating (and, probably a little too deep for this forum).

Okay, I have had my day of profundity. I’ll go back to making jokes now. Is this thing on? Wakka Wakka!
