Short-Term Running Goals:

2024 GOALS:

to not get fat

Long-Term Running Goals:

Continue running as often as I can, as far as I can, as fast as I can. Teaching my kids (by example) the rewards that come from putting in the work. Very slowly get to 50 states.

Personal:

I'm married, with two sons, 17, and 18.

I started running because someone dared me to.

I ran my first race 3 days after my 40th birthday. (Disney)

I finally got the flu last night at 9:30. 15 hours from leaving for the race. I coughed, and I just knew it was over."Dissapointed" does not cover this feeling. I haven't really been sick in years. I was due, but the timing sure does stink. This race was not meant to be.

This experience does make me realize how cool Spouse is. If she felt like this all week, and the kids felt like this all week, and she was STILL telling me to go to the race, she is one supportive wife!

Unbelieveable timing. Get better soon, and start shopping for a backup race. Sorry about missing this one, it's gotta suck.

Ohhhh Mannnn ... !!! I can't believe this. I know you probably don't want to think about anything but getting well right now but I'm with Joe, you should start looking for a back-up race immediately.

Thanks, guys. She will allow me to be mopey and gloomy until the race is over. After that, I better be one upbeat husband!

Since I can't run right now, this does kind of put a dent in my training. How far down the line do you recommend the replacement race be? Let's say I can't run for the next 5-7 days. I will need to build up miles again before the next one, right? So, am I shooting for March? April?

From SlowJoe on Fri, Jan 18, 2013 at 14:25:35 from 69.131.141.92

Yeah, that's my vote, March/April. I don't think you would run your best race in February. With a later race, you'd have enough time for a week or two of recovery, 4-8 weeks of solid training, and a 1-2 week taper. Thr only issue is you might have to go north a little to find a cool enough race, depending on when it is.

I've read that you don't really lose aerobic conditioning for about 2 weeks and physical conditioning for 5 weeks. In my mind that says you can go quite a while and then jump start your training pretty quickly. I was just reading today, in a cyclying magazine, that for burn-out they recommend taking that 2 weeks off and then when you go back to training you should be revived and actually be able to perform better.

Or you could back off and aim for a February marathon....say Ft Worth on April 24th :-)

Fort Worth? Never crossed my mind.

I'll look into it.

"Does Ft Worth Ever Cross Your Mind" is a very famous George Straight country song :-)

I really enjoyed the race last year. The course didn't seem that tough with just a few rolling hills.

Oh...that bites. Sorry. Something about getting sick prior to a race. I don't get it and it happens way to frequently.

Just think how fast you'll be now that you've shed a few pounds!
