Short-Term Running Goals:

2024 GOALS:

to not get fat

Long-Term Running Goals:

Continue running as often as I can, as far as I can, as fast as I can. Teaching my kids (by example) the rewards that come from putting in the work. Very slowly get to 50 states.

Personal:

I'm married, with two sons, 17, and 18.

I started running because someone dared me to.

I ran my first race 3 days after my 40th birthday. (Disney)

...but you gotter done!

From flatlander on Tue, Aug 19, 2014 at 17:17:40 from 198.207.244.102

I wouldn't have even started that one, good job.

From Derunzo on Thu, Aug 21, 2014 at 09:08:08 from 173.9.52.242

You okay man?

From SlowJoe on Thu, Aug 21, 2014 at 09:17:21 from 168.215.171.129

That's one long bathroom stop.

From Tom K on Thu, Aug 21, 2014 at 09:26:14 from 174.58.4.250

I guess. Thanks for asking, man.

That lady I like a lot is out of town. She gets back today. First week of school. It's been an interesting week.

Also, I have had a lot of time to think through this recent loss of MOJO. I think my downhill skid started last September, when I got my confirmation of acceptance letter from Boston. I never really believed I would make it there. Once I did, I lost my edge. I felt like I had nothing left to prove. I PR'd in Louisiana off of the work I did before the letter. Then skated through Boston, and Iowa. And then the excuses for "Not" running started coming too easy. It got to the point of running for the sake of running, without the desperation that drove me when I started. So I'm scrapping my plans for Savannah, and giving myself some extra time for Birmingham. Sorry, this is way more answer than you wanted.

From flatlander on Thu, Aug 21, 2014 at 09:29:34 from 198.207.244.102

Sounds like the right approach. Not being desperate is not necessarily a bad thing. There are lots of running days left, no hurry.

From SlowJoe on Thu, Aug 21, 2014 at 19:52:44 from 107.77.80.115

I went through the same thing after running Boston. Problem is there's not much left to accomplish for the common hobby jogger after that, other than arbitrary time goals and beating SBVD. Not sure what exactly made me care again, maybe running some crappy races, but I think it'll come back for you too.

From Tom K on Fri, Aug 22, 2014 at 08:51:15 from 174.58.4.250

If I'm going to pick a week to be a slacker, this was it. Yesterday it got up to 98 degrees, with a "felt like" 110! The last time I went 6 days without running was Mid-January 2013 (Flu).

Flat, I was hoping I could talk you into Savannah (You know, before I dropped out). That race sounds perfect for you. It is flatter than Louisiana, if that's possible. About the desperation - I used to think that every training run meant something, and that "this" workout was going to make or break me with meeting my time goal for the next race. I MISS THAT FEELING.

Joe, they all seem kind of arbitrary. Should I be gunning for Sub 3? I guess that's the next logical step.

From flatlander on Fri, Aug 22, 2014 at 09:00:58 from 76.31.29.220

If you miss the feeling then it will come back. I am doing Richmond (half) with my son this year, the week after. He lives in Richmond now, so maybe next year we'll mix it up and run Savannah instead.

From I Just Run on Fri, Aug 22, 2014 at 09:24:34 from 67.79.11.242

Ha ha ... I've been training for a sub-3 since I started running. I'll never get there but it's fun to tell people "yeah, I'm training to run a sub-3 hour marathon". :-)

From SlowJoe on Fri, Aug 22, 2014 at 09:49:41 from 168.215.171.129

Definitely gun for sub-3, it's a big motivator. But you're right, they're all arbitrary, so I'd also go after incremental victories on the way....Sub 3:05, 1:25 half, etc. Then it's less "boom or bust" and you can celebrate more PRs. That's the mindset I'm in with my own goals right now, anyway...making little dents in PRs.

From Derunzo on Fri, Aug 22, 2014 at 10:19:42 from 24.218.179.128

You better snap the "F" out of it! I'm exactly 50 miles behind you and making a push. Wait..... making a push? That sounds gross. There's my inappropriate humor rearing it's ugly head again. Should I delete this comment?

From I Just Run on Fri, Aug 22, 2014 at 10:23:18 from 67.79.11.242

Derunzo and Tom K,

You better stop talking and whining and get to running or I'm going to catch you both!

From Tom K on Fri, Aug 22, 2014 at 11:00:15 from 174.58.4.250

DERUNZO - KEEPING IT WEIRD! YEAH, MAN!

Okay, IJR. No more whining.

From I Just Run on Fri, Aug 22, 2014 at 11:03:03 from 67.79.11.242

Oooo... I just realized my comment may come back to haunt me! :-(
