Short-Term Running Goals:

2023 GOALS:

Coastal Delaware Running Festival Marathon - 4/16/23 - Rehoboth Beach, Delaware

Long-Term Running Goals:

Continue running as often as I can, as far as I can, as fast as I can. Teaching my kids (by example) the rewards that come from putting in the work. Very slowly get to 50 states.

Personal:

I'm married, with two sons, 17, and 18.

I started running because someone dared me to.

I ran my first race 3 days after my 40th birthday. (Disney)

Cool morning, by my standards @ 50 degrees. 2 mile warm up. At race start, and for the first mile, I was comfortably in 2nd place. At the 1 mile mark, I was passed by the guy that held the 2nd spot for the rest of the race. He was about 50 yards ahead of me until @ the 3 mile mark. Then I kind of lost him through the turns. So, for a race this short, there were long stretches of running by myself. @ 3.5 miles, a guy was setting up a water station. At this point, I didn't know if the runners were to stay on the walk, or go on the road. I yelled to him, to ask. He said "go left,..... NO RIGHT!" By then, I had already gone @ 20 yards to the left. So, I had to hop one of those rope-bollard fences to get back on track. Not a big deal, but it definitely affected my run. Especially since the next part of the course was sandy. I was passed by a guy with 1/4 mile to go, and then I really let off of the gas. Could I have got under 32 minutes? I dunno. My watch said 32:11, which is @ 6:28 pace. I don't know my official time yet. That will show up here later: http://www.zoomersrun.com/2013_Race_Results.html

Despite the wrong turn, I am pleased with this outcome. Great green eggs with the family after. And sister in law's first race! She ran the whole thing. I ran back and did the last mile with her. Good job Shannon!

Nicely done Tom. Sorry about the wrong turn business. Those things do affect both time and attitude. Great speed and overall time--congrats on the 1st in AD!

Great effort Tom. Definitely sub-32 without the wrong turn. That kind of stuff takes a toll in a high-intensity race distance like that. Nice to see you running well again!

Good running Tom!

Thanks for the support, guys. Although I am really happy with my time, and I am not that concerned with placing, I feel like my placing in this race requires an asterisk, for 2 reasons:

1. There were several races run in the area this weekend, including the Sarasota Half Marathon. I would be lying to myself (and to all of you), if I acted like this was the only race in town, and I beat the best local runners. Some folks ran both races, and I’m sure they didn’t put the effort into this race that they normally would have.

2. Ricardo Lomas. He pushes his son, Sammy, in a wheelchair really, really fast. Sammy is 18 and is a special needs person who has the rare Phelan-McDermid Syndrome. Mr. and Mrs. Lomas are wonderful people, here in Venice, that I have spoken to at a couple of races and events. When my kids met Sammy at the Sharks Tooth Festival last year, and reacted as children that age do – “What’s wrong with Sammy?! “, Mrs. Lomas was very kind and understanding, and calmly explained his condition to my kids. That was a pretty powerful moment for me, and probably fairly commonplace for her. When Ricardo and Sammy get a few yards from the finish line in most races around here, Ricardo will take Sammy out of the chair, and Sammy will walk himself across the finish, using the chair as support. I have seen finish line cheering crowds reduced to tears, quiet applause, and a couple of “Way to go, Sammy!” yells, at many races. This is an old video, but you can learn more about them here: http://team22q13.org/teamsammy/18-teamsammy/36-2011-gulf-coast-journal-interview or here: http://www.sammysrun.com/ I tell you all that to say that I was passed by The Lomas’s with @ quarter mile to go. I then went past them, as Ricardo was helping Sammy out of the chair near the finish. Had they simply run across the finish line, they would have beat me handily. I should have been 6th, not 4th.

Way to run Tom. Now I know why your kids hold up those signs :-)

BTW...I know all about running the wrong way, I just didn't have anyone nice enough to tell me I was going in the wrong direction!

"Nice?" Okay, yeah, he volunteered to support the runners. I don't think I used that exact word in the heat of the moment, though. I might have been a little angry at the time.
